Assemblage

Today we're going to discuss different assemblages that exist in the music industry. My first example of assemblage is bare repetition. Bare repetition is repeating exactly what was done before. My example may be a little different than most but I thought it was a great example of bare repetition. The first example is called Countdown (Snuggie Version). This video is a side by side video of Beyonce's original music video to Countdown and then a remake video to a guy doing the exact same dance moves and the exact same editing and filters. This is an example of bare repetition because the guy didn't make anything up himself, he learned the exact dance moves and edited the video effects to be the same that Beyonce uses. He also doesn't sing himself, but he lip signs to Beyonce singing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4aiwTkDwCY

My second example is of an ethical assemblage. This one falls under creative repetition. The song I chose was Show Me Love remix. This remix uses the same words and the same singer that sings the original version of Show Me Love. This is a great assemblage because it introduces a new beat which changes the entire feel of the song. The remix also opens this song to a new audience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5tcyjVf1lo

The first example had the purpose of entertainment and it was a parody. The second example was for entertainment purposes as well but for a completely different audience.

When discussing examples like these it is important to recognize that some assemblages can be harmful because it changes the original artist's message. In both examples, they are not hurtful because both artists like these different pieces. In order for an assemblage to fall under fair use it still has to meet the requirements. Some examples can be for no profit, have a different purpose or message, etc.

I think that design is a major part in assemblage. This difference can add elements that make this piece original and not just a repetition of the original piece.

I think it is possible that circulation can have a negative affect on the ethical status of assemblage because it may ruin the reputation of the original artist.
